Meet our Governing Body

  Clare Clegg

Parent Governor/Link Safeguarding/More Able Governor

My name is Clare and I have two daughters at Florence Melly – Macy in Year 6 and Madison in Year 4. I work as a VAT Tax Specialist within HMRC and I am currently completing a BA (Hons) degree in Professional Taxation. I became a parent governor in June 2016 following an Ofsted inspection of the school. As a parent I wanted to understand what had led to that Ofsted report and to ensure that our children were being provided with the best education possible at Florence Melly. Having seen the work that goes into educating our children and how dedicated the staff are, I am confident that this is the case. My girls and I love Florence Melly and thoroughly enjoy all of the brilliant events, activities and opportunities that our school provides for the children. I know my girls will look back on their time here with fondness.

  Janet Matthews

Co-opted Governor/Link Safeguarding/SEND Governor

My name is Janet and I am the Vice-Chair of Governors. I attended Florence Melly myself and after my eldest daughter and son had been in the school a few years a vacancy became available on the governor body and I applied to become a parent governor in 2014. I really enjoyed being a governor and when my parent governor term came to an end, with the backing of the full governing body, I became a co-opted governor in 2018. After receiving a lot of help and support when Ben (who has significant special educational needs) started in the Nursery, I really wanted to be able to help the school move forward and support and challenge the staff. I have a particular interest in Safeguarding and SEND, I am an active member of PATCH and I really enjoy volunteering in the school library. I am married to David, who is a chef in Alder Hey and we have 3 children…Ava who has now moved to Year 8, Ben in Year 3 and Chloe in Year 2.

  Aaron Leach

Associate Governor

My name is Aaron Leach and I am the Deputy Headteacher and an Associate Governor at Florence Melly. I live in West Kirby with my partner and two wonderful children. I have worked in our school for seven years and really feel part of this community. I initially came to the school as a student teacher and was lucky to secure a teaching post in Year 5 a couple of years later. Since then I have held the English Subject Lead post, worked as an Assistant Headteacher and now as Deputy Head with responsibility for Safeguarding, Curriculum, Assessment and the school website. I have experience of teaching across the phases from EYFS to upper Key Stage 2 and have worked in requires improvement, good and outstanding schools. I am also a Governor at West Kirby Primary School where my daughter attends and have responsibility for Pupil Premium and Assessment.

Ken Heaton

My name is Ken Heaton and I am the Headteacher and a Governor of our school. I am married and have two grown-up children. I grew up in Cherry Lane and attended Florence Melly Primary School from the age of 4 years to 11years and really enjoyed my time at the school. I have been a Headteacher in a number of schools and I have also worked as an Ofsted Inspector, Learning Network Director and School Improvement Partner with many schools in Liverpool. I also set up education centres in Everton and Liverpool football clubs. I took on the post of Headteacher of Florence Melly in September 2015 and my aim is always to ensure that your children are safe, happy and enjoy the best possible education. Who knows, perhaps one of your children could be the future headteacher of Florence Melly Community Primary School

Sarah Yates

Parent Governor

My name is Sarah Yates and I am a mother of three boys who all attend Florence Melly Community Primary School and I work in the school as a part-time SEND Teaching Assistant. I believe that children develop and flourish when they are supported and feel supported and school plays a crucial role in that. For me, our school does not just provide the curriculum we do a lot more – a holistic approach to education, teaching confidence, empathy, discipline, trust and respect.

  Joe Doyle

Staff Governor

My name is Joe Doyle I started working at Florence Melly in 2014 as a teaching assistant. I live in the Childwall area with my wife whom I have been married to for eighteen years and we have two teenage daughters. Previous to working at Florence Melly I have a worked in a football coaching capacity for over 25 years with early years aged children right through to adults. I am the Staff Governor and have been in this position since 2016. My current role includes being the Pastoral Support Officer, Attendance Lead and Mental Health Lead. These roles give me the opportunity to have a positive impact on our children and staff both inside and outside of the school gates.

My name is Carl Gilbertson and I am a Co-opted Governor at Florence Melly Community Primary School, with specific responsibility for Pupil Premium. I have fifteen years experience as a Governor and was co-opted onto our board in 2017.
